This diagram depicts the Golgi complex as a series of flattened sacs from which numerous vacuoles arise. Some vacuoles contain secretory material that has been synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum. Some vac uoles appear to be empty and travel to the cell surface, where their membranes fuse with the cell membrane. Other vacuoles contain lytic enzymes and be come primary lysosomes. These fuse with autophagosomes or heterophagosomes to form secondary lysosomes. Undigested material remains in residual bodies.

Certain individuals have b e e n found to have more than 46 chromosomes, while others have fewer. Abnormalities in the shape or form of individual chromosomes have also b e e n noted. These abnormalities may be considered under two headings: (1) alteration in number of chromosomes and (2) alteration in structure of chromosomes. Although the finding of chromosomal abnormality is regarded as uncom mon, it is now apparent that those cases detected in postnatal life represent only the residue of a much larger group of abnormal zygotes.

The genetic make-up of an individual is called the genotype, and the effect that is produced is called the phenotype. It is basic in modern genetics to assume that genes occur in pairs, that one of each pair is received from each parent, and that the genes remain unchanged through many generations. T h e simplest approach to the mode of inheritance of a particular characteristic — for example, a disease — is to consider that the condition is due to a single-gene disorder. The gene may be either dominant or recessive.
